AN UNUSUAL GOLD-SPLASHED BRONZE INCENSE BURNER AND STAND
XUANDE CAST SIX-CHARACTER MARK, 18TH CENTURY
The deep-sided body cast with a band of clouds interrupted on one side by the nianhao cast in a line within a rectangular reserve below the sharply angled shoulder, the neck with two pairs of dragons centered on whorl motifs reserved on a squared scroll band, with a pair of scroll handles and narrow borders of foliate scroll encircling the mouth and foot rims, base cast with a flowerhead; the tripod stand cast on the underside with a sixteen-character inscription, Da Ming Xuande wunian Jiandu Gongbu guanchen Wu Bangzuo zao, which may be translated, 'Made by Wu Bangzuo, supervisor of the Ministry of Works, in the 5th year of Xuande of the Great Ming'; both the censer and stand with a reddish-olive patina liberally splashed in gold, crack to base of censer--7 3/4in. (19.6cm.) across handles
