Finely decorated with lotus plants rising from a band of frothy waves, with a lappet border below and a ruyi collar filled with four of the babao on the shoulder above, all outlined in slip and glazed turquoise, green, cream and mauve on a rich purplish-blue ground, the interior of the mouth, neck and foot glazed green, mark on base obscured and covered by the green glaze, body cracks, neck restored--12in. (30.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

It is unusual to find a collar of ruyi heads enclosing babao on a meiping of this type. A meiping of the same size and with similar decoration of lotus plants rising from waves but below ruyi heads filled with lotus sprigs and divided by cloud scrolls is in the British Museum, illustrated in Oriental Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, vol. 5, no. 190
