THREE-CHARACTER MARK, WEN XIN ZHAI, IN UNDERGLAZE BLUE WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE, KANGXI

The body flaring widely from the tapered ring foot and then angled below the shallow sides to rise to a lipped rim, well painted on the interior with three figures set against a plain ground illustrating a scene from the novel Shuihu zhuan ('The Water Margin'), with gilt highlights, small shallow rim chip--8 1/8in. (20.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The mark, Wen Xin Zhai, may be translated 'Study where one examines one's thoughts'
