The first a seated corpulent figure of Budai with one hand resting on his raised right knee, a bottle to his left, wearing a leaf- green-glazed robe loosely draped about his shoulders exposing his upper torso and protruberant belly and falling in soft folds on the flat shaped base where his slipper, now chipped, is balanced at the edge, some damage; and a pair of Buddhistic lion joss-stick holders, each seated on its haunches on a barrel-form plinth, muzzles restored, chips--all 4 7/8in. Lot Essay

The figure of Budai is similar to two figures, both holding rosaries, illustrated by Walter Bondy, Kang-Hsi, Munchen, 1923, p. 176. Compare, also, the figure sold in these rooms June 4, 1992, lot 288
