Lot Essay

This work was painted circa 1835-40, and depicts a road in Ville d'Avray that Corot also painted later in his career (see Robaut, no. 1485). Our picture was commissioned directly from Corot by a friend, M. Preschez, who was a solicitor from Coulomiers. Corot also painted another work for Preschez depicting a fisherman near a river, and delivered the finished picture accompanied by a photograph of himeslf and dedicated to Preschez,

We are grateful to Martin Dietrele for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
