A WROUGHT IRON AND COPPER BRASS BETTY LAMP
ATTRIBUTED TO PETER DERR, 1793-1868, TULPEHOCKEN TOWNSHIP, BERKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, DATED 1860

With shaped brass well and conforming hinged lid, the wrought iron handle mounted with hanging spike and wick pick on chain attached through grommet, the handle stamped "P.D. 1860", on a turned wood stand--7½in. high

Lot Essay

Made in 1860, this lamp is one of the last known betty lamps to have been crafted by Peter Derr. A nearly identical lamp also stamped "P.D. 1860" is illustrated and discussed in Spears, p. 165, plate 93. A related lamp attributed to Peter Derr, now in the Titus C. Geesey collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is illustrated in Garvan, p. 161, fig. 14
