Lot Essay

This armchair represents a synthesis of stylistic features and is an exceedingly rare example of the mingling of cultural influences in the American Colonies. Familiar with high style European furniture designs, the maker of this chair has combined English and Continental vocabulary in a regional idiom. The solid baluster splat flanked by serpentine stiles are features associated with Queen Anne forms while the plank seat and box stretcher recall early European backed stools. The large space between the seat and the splat indicates that this chair would have been fashioned with a cushion for added comfort and style.
