A WATERCOLOR AND INK DRAWING
ATTRIBUTED TO CHRISTIAN BAMBERGER, ACTIVE C. 1823 - 1832, LEBANON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, DATED 1826

Centering a large ink and watercolor decorated tulip emanating from a stylized urn and flanked by several birds and tulips, all enclosed in a rectangular banded border--11¾ x 10in.

Lot Essay

The attribution for this fraktur drawing is based on related documented examples of Bamberger's work. These include a drawing for Hannah Schmidt, dated 1832, and on file in the Decorative Arts Photographic Collection, The Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum, NEH 353, 5 - 7, as well as an additional watercolor and ink drawing, DAPC No. 70.10.

A similar watercolor and ink drawing was sold in the Collection of the Late Helen Janssen Wetzel, vol.II, Sotheby Park Bernet, October 2-4, 1980, lot 1820. An almost identical image is in the Lorimer Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
