LEE AND SECRETARY OF WAR DAVIS GRANT A SOLDIER A FURLOUGH, 1854
An interesting example of a document linking Lee and Davis, seven years before the outbreak of the Civil War. Wheelock's letter forwards a surgeon's certificate attesting to his "disability to perform duty for the present," and he requests "the leave of absence for six months recommended in the said certificate." Lee approves Wheelock's request, as does Totten, who submits it to Davis for final approval, which he grants.
