TAYLOR, ZACHARY, President. Autograph letter signed ("Z. Taylor Col. U.S. Army") to Joseph Rolette, Prairie du Chien; Fort Crawford, Prairie du Chien, 22 December 1834, 1 page, 4to, 252 x 200 mm. (10 x 7 3/4 in.), integral address leaf in Taylor's hand, with recipient's docket, backed with paper, but otherwise in fine condition, the ink dark and clear. Taylor defers to a superior jurisdiction in a quarrel over real estate: "I have the honor to acknowledge...your letter...stating that the public Hospital at this place has been erected on ground belonging to you and demanding to be put in possession of the same, or payment made to you for rent; also to enter into a fair compromise with the Government if I was authorized to make it. In reply to which I have to state that I have no authority to enter into that, or any other arrangement proposed in relation to this business, but with the next mail refer the matter to the Qr. Master Genl. who has the controul [sic] of such matters, and will do all that is proper...." An attractive one-page example.
