(10 1/2 x 8 1/2 in.), slightly irregular at top, a minort fold tear at bottom, light spotting, but overall in good condition for this document (which often survives in deplorable condition), with a clear, dark signature of the Commander-in-Chief, professionally matted with a tinted portrait (engraved by Thomas Cheesman after John Trumbull, 1796), and glazed in a giltwood frame. A Continental Army discharge certificate in which "His Excellency George Washington....certifies that "Samuel Potter Soldier in the First New York Regiment," having "faithfully served the United States six years," and having enlisted for the War only, is discharged.
