Of circular form on spreading cylindrical base with applied wire spirals, and set with cabochon amethysts and moonstones within bands of beaded decoration, the bowl lined with blue guilloche enamel, the wide rim and rectangular handles set with panels of polychrome enamel, amethysts and moonstones within similar applied wirework and beading, marked under base--16 5/8in. (42.2cm.) length over handles

Lot Essay

Thorolf Holmboe (1866-1935), Norwegian artist and decorative painter, also made designs for enamel work. A painted porcelain jar designed by Holmboe is in the collection of the Oslo Kunstindustrimuseet, illustrated in David McFadden, ed., Scandinavian Modern Design 1880-1980, 1982, fig. 17, pp. 58-59.
