Lot Essay

The stone stele was discovered by Bi Yuan (1730-1797) in the Qianlong period (1736-1795) . The rubbing was made soon after the stele was found, when the characters " " and " " had not yet been broken away. Therefore, the rubbing was made during the Jiaqing era (1796-1820).
