Lot Essay

The original stone of the Tianfa Shenchan Stele was kept at the Zunjing Pavilion in Jiangning of Jiangsu province, until it was destroyed by fire in the tenth year of the Jiaqing era (1805). Many rubbings were made after the stele was recarved, and there are many skilfully made forgeries. This rubbing was made during the Qianlong era (1736-1795) before the stele was destroyed.
