PAINTED AT CASTEL DURANTE, LUSTRED AT GUBBIO, DATED 1537, BY MAESTRO GIORGIO ANDROLI

Of shallow cardinal's hat form, painted on a white ground in blue and green and lustred in gold and ruby on a white ground with an heraldic shield, the wide flat rim with crossed quivers of arrows and fruiting acanthus alternating with a foliate scroll diaper, the underside lustred in gold and ruby with three panels of stylised scrolls, inscribed 1537 and signed Mo Go, inscribed in red with Sackler number 78.2.7 (lustre on edge of well and rim refreshed, chips to footrim and test drill holes restored, spot of wear to center)--9in. (22.8cm.) diam.

Sold with thermoluminescence certificate 381q52 dated September 1985 from the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, Oxford University, stating that the sample tested was last fired between 400 and 600 years ago (1385-1585).
