VENICE, CIRCA 1560, WORKSHOP OF DOMENICO DA VENEZIA

Of globular form, painted on a white ground in strong shades of blue, yellow, green and ochre enriched with white, the front with a portrait of the Doge within a medallion against a ground of scrolling fruit and flowers enclosing a cartouche labelled in Gothic script for Sø · de· polipo above a grotesque mask, the back with a portrait of the apostle Peter within a similar medallion, the underside inscribed in red with Sackler number 78.2.25b (restored crack touching the back of Peter's head, test drill holes to underside)--13½in. (34.3cm.) high

Sold with thermoluminescence certificate 381q68 dated December 1985 from the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, Oxford University, stating that the sample tested was last fired between 360 and 550 years ago (1435-1625).
