Lot Essay

Kennedy, a Classical and Renaissance scholar, produced 7 volumes entitled Studies in the History and Criticism of Sculpture that contained over 300 photographs detailing the manifold experience of studying and viewing sculpture. Interested in achieving more than just a mechanical documentation of each work of art, Kennedy used elaborate scaffolding systems and mirrors in order to reveal otherwise visually inaccessible areas. Many of his images are closely cropped to reveal details such as the flow of drapery, suspended motion, or the rhythmic patterns of decorative lines and planes.

Kennedy's magnum opus was exhibited at The Detroit Institute of Arts
September-November 1987.
