Lot Essay

Charles Emmanuel II (1635-1675), 14th Duke of Savoy, was the son of Victor Amadeus I of Savoy and his wife Christina of France. He married his first cousin Frances of Bourbon, daughter of Gaston Duke of Orléans, in 1663, and secondly Mary Joan Baptista of Savoy-Nemours in 1665. His son from his second marriage, Victor Amadeus II, became King of Sicily and first King of Sardinia. Two other miniatures depicting Duke Charles Emmanuel II are illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Miniature Sabaude, Turin, 1996, p. 15, no. 1 and 2.
