Lot Essay

The sitter is probably George Tweddell of Thorptheroles, son of George Tweddell, mayor of Durham and his wife Elizabeth. He settled lands in Grindon, Elnick and Hesilden in 1724 and married Mary, daughter of John Aymley in the same year. They had three sons, John, George and Francis. George Tweddell was buried at Grindon on 6 May 1732.
