A handwritten old label on the reverse reads 'Le Comte de Palfy, militaire autrichien auquel mon grand père M. de Lalande de Vernon fut attaché pendant l'émigrat[ion]'.
Charles Hieronymus Pálffy of Erdöd, Count of the Holy Roman Empire (1735-1816) was chancellor of Hungary until 1807, the year he was styled Prince Pálffy. He received the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1782 from Emperor Joseph II. Another miniature of Count Pálffy was in the Brewster Collection, Sotheby's Geneva, 15 November 1995, lot 268.
