In 1922 Ethel Barrymore gave her brother John a Temple edition copy of Hamlet. This book was to be the catalyst for what is still considered the classic portrayal of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The red leather volume is heavily annotated throughout in pencil, including four different self portraits by John Barrymore. On the inside cover handwritten This copy used as my prompt book to study from in first Hamlet Prod. - in New York also England - and in Hollywood for movies. John Barrymore 1934.
