Discussing Elisabeth Frink's 1960s series of male heads, Bryan Robertson (op. cit, p.54) writes: 'Her sculptures have little to do with academic realism, then, since her interest in external appearance only goes so far as it is useful in expressing a thought or meaning. Shapes will be modified, abstracted or eliminated not for the sake of formal exploration, but in order to communicate more clearly. The heads and figures, for instance, are neither studies nor - except rarely - portraits. The artist is more interested in character types and in masculine role-playing and identification than in individuals'.
