A LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED MAHOGANY COMMODE
LATE 18TH CENTURY

With rounded rectangular moulded grey and white veined marble top above three panelled frieze drawers fitted with leaf-tip cast encadrements, above two long drawers similarly panelled and mounted and fitted with crisply cast blossoming lockplates, the sides similarly panelled and mounted, the angles fitted with ribbon-entwined acanthus-cast chutes, on tapering fluted legs headed by stiff-leaf cast capitals and ending in foliate toupie sabots, bearing the stamp J H RIESENER thrice and JME once (restorations)-34¼in. (87cm.) high, 51in. (129.5cm.) wide, 23¾in. (60cm.) deep

Lot Essay

A closely related commode stamped Riesener from the Collection of Mrs. Orme Wilson was sold Park-Bernet Galleries, 25 and 26 March 1949, another, not stamped and without the distinctive apron mount was sold Parke-Bernet Galleries, 17 January 1953, lot 353. A Louis XVI commode with virtually identical apron, similarly bowed angles and chutes is illustrated in La Folie d'Artois, 1988, p. 216.
