Lot Essay

Li Shizuo was born in Shenyang in Manchuria and was a nephew by marriage of the artist Gao Qipei (1660-1734). He received painting instruction in his youth from Wang Hui (1632-1717) and Ma Yi (18th century). His conservative painting style and wide range of subjects, including landscapes, figures and flowers and birds, suited him for service as a court painter.
