Lot Essay

Wang Chen from Taichang, Jiangsu was the great-grandson of the painter Wang Yuanqi (1642-1715) and descendant of Wang Shimin (1592-1680). He received his jinshi degree during the Qianlong period (1736-1795) and entered government service. His painting and calligraphy styles derived from those of his family members and was greatly influenced by the four Yuan Masters.
