This composition is an example of Bada Shanren's rendering of natural elements with brushstrokes that are so swift and loose that the effect borders on abstraction. Very wet ink is used and the bleeding caused by painting on satin heightens the wateriness of the painting. Although painted on paper, an eight leaf album of rocks and natural elements painted by the artist in 1647 contains a similar abbreviated, wet style (Bunjinga Suihen: Chugoku Hen, Bada Shanren ("Compiled Paintings of Literati Artists, vol. 6, Tokyo 1986, nos. 55-57).
