A WELL-CARVED SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF GUANYIN

The seated figure holding a scroll in the right hand and a string of prayer beads in the left, wearing loosely draped robes and a cowl finely incised with scattered lotus blossoms and lotus-scroll borders picked out in black, her hair drawn up into a high topknot bound with a fillet centered by an image of Amitabha Buddha, the stone softly polished and of even, creamy golden tone, traces of gilding, rim chip--5 5/8in. (14.2cm.) high
