Lot Essay

Salomé was probably cast during Eberle's 1907 voyage to Italy where she supervised the casting of several works at a foundry in Naples. Also entitled The Dancer, the figure reflects the fascination at that time with modern dancers such as Loië Fuller and Isadora Duncan. The model was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, New York in its Winter Exhibition of 1908 (cat. no. 432). That same year, it won an award at the Woman's Art Club of New York's 17th annual exhibition. An example was exhibited in 1909 at the Venice International Exposition of Art (cat. no. 94) and was subsequently purchased by The Society for the Encouragement of Art in Venice.
