Lot Essay

The Isere transported the Statue of Liberty from Rouen to New York, carrying Bartholdi's statue in 214 wooden cases which weighed a total of over 150 tons. Led by Commander Lespinasse de Saune, the vessel left France on May 1 and arrived in New York on June 19, 1885. The elaborate reception surpassed all expectation; the bay was filled with American naval vessels, large excursions boats, millionaires' yachts, steam launches, tugs, and many other small crafts.
