A FINE ENAMELED COPPER TABLE LAMP BASE
BY TIFFANY STUDIOS

The baluster shaped base on a raised foot, enameled to depict fruiting vine and foliage in brilliant translucent shades of iridescent green, russian-blue, amber, burgundy and shades of red, with three upturned arms and fuel canister, stamped SG 40--14 1/2in. (36.7cm.) high

cf. Janet Zapata, The jewelry and enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Thames and Hudson Ltd., London, 1993, pp. 58, 59 discusses the distinctive manner in which Louis Comfort Tiffany signed his enamels. All of the enamels have a prefix of EL or SG before the numbers. Of the SG series Zapata says " The SG numbers from 40 to about 65 are all rounded forms in the shape of bowls, their surface in repousse with a variety of plant motifs." "He carefully chose the shape of each vessel to conform to the plant on the surface, thus achieving harmony between form and design." This lot, which is marked SG 40, clearly exhibits these characteristics.
