EDO PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)

Of rectagular shape and oval section lavishly decorated in bright gold takamaki-e with embellishments of nashiji, kirigane, aogai and other colors of gold, red and silver on a gold hirame and gyobu nashiji ground, on side picturing a scene of Shotoku Taishi hiding in a willow tree espied by two warriors on the ground and the other side two warriors, one mounted on horseback, the flanges of the helmet and the blade of the long sword inlaid silver, the interior cases nashiji; fitted with a coral bead ojime and ivory netsuke carved in the form of a shishi supported by a rectangular, tall stand, signed on the base- 3 7/8 in. (9.8 cm.) high, minor losses to ground
