Of rectangular shape with rounded corners containing a round, brass and glass miniature compass and sun dial, decorated on the lid and sides in gold and silver takamaki-e on a roiro-nuri ground with feathers and on the interior in nashiji, the compass and sundial of brass inscribed with the directions in Japanese and in English and with the hours of the day (cock, monkey, etc.), inscribed on the underside of the case in gold lacquer Keio kigen kinoto ushi (Keio era, year of the ox [1866]), 5th month, no yoshi shoyu shojin no shoku (auspicious month, in observance of ancient knowledge) chiyosai Shozan with kakihan- 1 7/8 in. (4.7 cm.) long
