AN OMORI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1775), SIGNED OMORI EISHU (TERUHIDE)

The oval plate is decorated in shakudo nanako. The nanako extends over the edge and is carved in high relief and inlaid in gold, silver, and soft metal depicting a mythical lion dog (shishi) under a large peony plant; the reverse shows a spray of flowering peony--height 7.2cm., width 6.6cm., thickness 4.75mm.

Omori Eishu (Teruhide) (1730-1789) was the third master of the Omori family and was nephew, student and adopted son of Omori Eisho (Terumasa), the second master. In spite of his position he created his own independent style, and had many students.
