A KATANA, PROBABLY ECHIZEN
EDO PERIOD (FIRST HALF 17TH CENTURY), SIGNED SADASHIGE, ATTRIBUTED TO FUJIWARA SADASHIGE

Sugata: with shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune and chu-kissaki; nagasa: 2 shaku, 3 sun, 6 bu (71.6 cm.); sori: koshi-zori of 1.3 cm.; fumbari: 1.3 cm.; horimono: kaki-toshi bo-hi on either side. Jihada: elegant and precisely delineated masame.
Hamon: medium width suguba komidare in ko-nie intermixed with areas of hotsure and extensive niju-ba, especially in the monouchi. Boshi: hakikake; point of kissaki broken off. Nakago keitai: wide, furisode and with kaki-toshi bo-hi; yasurime: kiri-yasuri; mekugi-ana: two; mei, katana-mei: Sadashige.

Handachi-koshirae: a saya dusted with powdered wood [splits, chips and with missing kurikata]; full Higo style handachi mounts in shakudo with an acid-etched surface decorated with flowering kiri and leaves, unsigned, height of tsuba 8.4 cm.
