MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1500), ATTRIBUTED TO AKASAKA SENJUIN

Sugata: with shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune and o-kissaki; nagasa: 1 shaku, 6 sun, 1 bu (48.7 cm.); sori: 0.8 cm.; horimono: (both sides) bonji and soe-hi just below the shinogi-ji in the nakago. Jihada: itame. Hamon: very shallow gonome in nioi and bright nie creating deep layerings of sunagashi along the majority of the length, above which are several patches of nijuba resembling stringy clouds running parallel to the hamon, but becoming much more tortured in the monouchi, especially the ura. Boshi: midare-komi with moderately long kaeri. Nakago keitai: osuriage and with a dry, grey-brown patina; yasurime: kiri-yasuri; nakagojiri: kiri-jiri; mekugi-ana: one; mei, mumei. Shirasaya; storage bag.

Accompanied by a kanteisho, no. 455, dated Showa 53 (1978), issued by Suiken Fukunaga, attributing the blade to Tamba Yoshimichi (circa 1670); a kanteisho, no. 7363, dated Showa 59 (1984), issued by the Nippon Token Hozon Kai, attributing the blade to Iga (no) Kami Kinmichi; a Tokubetsu kicho ninteisho, no. 5504915, dated Showa 55 (1980), issued by the N.B.T.H.K., attributing the blade to Akasaka Senjuin.
