London: Secker & Warburg 1949. 8vo, original plain blue wrappers, the book's title, the author's name, and the names of his literary agents written in ink on front cover, the book's title written in ink on spine, all probably by Roger Senhouse, minor creasing of spine, half morocco folding case. ADVANCE UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, printed on proofing paper; ROGER SENHOUSE'S COPY (he was Orwell's editor at Secker & Warburg and was T.S. Eliot's great friend) with his signature and the phrase "first proof" on front free endpaper, with a note by him dated 1964 regarding "Big Brother," etc., on the same page, and with the cover lettering noted above probably in his hand. In this proof the book's title is expresed numerically; in published copies (see following lot) the form of the title is changed to Nineteen Eight-Four.
