LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Printed check accomplished and signed ("A. Lincoln"), Springfield, [Illinois], 14 March 1860. 1 page, oblong, 57 x 182 mm. (2 1/4 x 7 3/16 in.), clean slit cancellations discreetly repaired, a small circular punch cancellation at left-hand portion, but in good condition. An attractive check printed in blue ink in several typefaces, with a large vignette of a steam engine and cars at left, by "Richards & Smith, Printers." Lincoln orders payment of $24.00 to "self."

On the day this check was written, March 14, Lincoln returned to Springfield "in excellent health and in excellent spirits" after his extended East Coast journey, during which he delivered the famous Cooper Union Address in New York and visited his son Robert Todd at Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire (see lot ). The following day, Lincoln deposited $604 into his account, which amount may constitute speaking fees collected during his tour as well as checks from legal clients which had accumulated in his absence (see E.S. Meirs, Lincoln Day By Day, 2:276).
