TAYLOR, ZACHARY, President. Autograph free frank ("Free Z. Taylor") as President, on envelope (letter not present) addressed in a secretarial hand to Robert Lane of Lutton, NH, n.d. [9 May ?1849], pale orange circular "Free Washington D.C." datestamp, red wax seal on flap, trifling smudge to signature.
Taylor's presidential franks are uncommon, doubtless due to the brevity of his Presidential term: the Stern collection had only a single example, although the Grunin collection boasted four. This envelope, although undated, was apparently franked a few days after Taylor's inauguration on 4 March 1849, and is likely to be among the earliest of Taylor's surviving franks as President.
