Lot Essay

A study for one of the sculptures of Kings of Austria and Bavaria for the Triumphal Arch planned in honour of the marriage of Cosimo dei Medici with Maria Maddalena, Archduchess of Austria in 1608. The arch, which may not have been built, was designed for Canto della Paglia at the corner of Santa Maria Maggiore. A finished drawing of the scheme showing the sculptures above the balustrade is in the Uffizi, Chappell, op. cit., no. 98. The fullest account of the commission and a list of all the surviving drawings is given by Chappell. A drawing by Parigi for the same festivities is included in the sale of drawings from the Houthakker Collection as lot 18
