Comparable with the caricature of a man holding a hat in the British Museum, N. Turner, in Pier Francesco Mola 1612-1666, Milan, 1989, no. III. 91, illustrated. Although the inscription identifying the caricature as of Pietro da Cortona is probably fanciful, the artist was crippled with gout as is recorded in a letter of 1666 to the Prince of Tuscany: 'la podagra mi rende quasi inabile quasi la metà del tempo' ['gout disables me almost half the time'].
