Lot Essay

The seated man holding a flask of wine and a glass, studied on both recto and verso, is related to the figure of Lisandro in qu'oy n'avoir pour vous trois qu'une seule bouteille, known through an engraving by Marie Horthemels, G. Wildenstein, Nicolas Lancret, Paris, 1924, no. 321, illustrated. The humorous couplet on the engraving mocks Lisandrino who should have brought more wine and fewer women to the woods with him: 'Quoy n'avoir pour vous trois qu'une seule bouteille c'est bien peu pour vous mettre entrain il fallait mieux Lisandre, apporter plus devin et n'amener au bois avec vous qu'une belle'
The head of a woman studied in the lower right corner is probably preparatory for the figure holding a basket in Le Printemps in the Louvre, G. Wildenstein, op. cit., no. 11, illustrated. The engraver of the first composition, Marie Horthemels, died in 1727 which is a terminus antequem for both paintings
