This and the following lots are studies for toile de jouy for the Oberkampf Factory at Jouy, near Versailles. The factory was established by the Swiss Christoph-Philipp Oberkampf in 1760, and soon expanded from a workforce of 100 in 1762 to over 1300 in 1781. The output varied from textiles celebrating contemporary events, such as American Independence, to famous monuments of Egypt. It was, however, most famous for fabrics with flower designs, which varied from stylised patterns inspired by Islamic pottery to botanically accurate studies, such as the present drawings. Little is known of Madame Peigné, neé Jouanon, except that she specialised in designs of flowers and married a marchand d'indiennes in Versailles. A group of drawings with the same provenance was sold at Christie's, London, 6 July 1993, lots 148-58
