Lot Essay

This drawings probably dates from about 1640-5, shortly after the end of Bol's four or five year apprenticeship in the studio of Rembrandt. The type of 'oriental' figure recalls drawings of the 1630s by Rembrandt- such as lot 385 in this sale. Benesch, when including this drawing in the revised edition of his corpus of Rembrandt's drawings, compared it with a study of a woman asleep in a landscape in Rotterdam, now also generally given to Bol, J. Giltay, The drawings by Rembrandt and his school in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, 1988, no. 46, illustrated
