MAKER'S MARK OF TIFFANY & CO., NEW YORK, 1892-1893, FOR THE WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION OF 1893

Of shaped rectangular form, the bottle rock crystal engraved with scrolls, mounted within a silver jacket etched with Brownie figures in festive poses and playing in a field, the hinged cover engraved with floral decoration, also engraved with a monogram and, under base, with an address 140 Joralemon St., Brooklyn, marked under base, 11293/3340, also with Columbian Exposition mark of 1893--5¼in. high

Descriptif du lot

A silver flask also by Tiffany & Co. and etched with similar scenes of Brownies was sold in these Rooms, October 21, 1989, lot 34. The scenes on both flasks reflect the tremendous popularity of Brownies in the late 19th century America. Palmer Cox (1840-1924), illustrator and author, published the first in a series of Brownie books for children in 1887. The great success of this book established the popularity of Brownies and Cox, who published 13 more volumes from 1887 to 1918.
