Lot Essay

The mark on this cream-jug is possibly that of Willima Pollard of Boston (see Kathryn C. Buhler, American Silver in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1972, p. 137). There is some debate about Pollock's date of death; a South Carolina silversmith of that name died in 1740, but Currier lists William Pollard of Boston's death date as 1746. A cream-jug by John Tanner of Newport of similar design to the present example is dated circa 1740 (see Buhler, op. cit., fig. 488, p. 559). The V-shaped seam at the spout is typical of New England cream jugs.
