The arms are those of Gardiner, as borne by John Gardiner (1714-1764) and his descendants, of Gardiner's Island, New York. The lozenge-shaped shield indicates that this cann was owned by a lady, unmarried or widowed, of the Gardiner family. A silver caster by van der Spiegel with the Gardiner arms was sold in these Rooms, June 17, 1992, lot 67.
