Lot Essay

Abel Cottey (1655-1711) may have been the first clock maker to establish a clock making business in the American colonies. He is known to have been in business in Philadelphia before 1700. For a discussion of this clock maker see, George H. Eckhardt, Pennsylvania Clocks and Clock Makers, p. 174.
