Lot Essay

Charles Christian was working in New York by the second decade of the nineteenth century. Besides this table, the only labeled furniture associated with Christian is an Egyptian style desk made for the Governor's room and the Mayor's office of City Hall in 1814 and 1815, when Christian's shop was located on Wall Street (Antiques 41, no. 3 (March 1942): 200-201.) When Christian made this table, his warehouse was located at 90 Fulton Street, a few doors down from Duncan Phyfe's shop. As his label indicates, Christian, like many of his competitors, was active in the export business, catering to merchants who were involved with Southern and West-Indian trade routes.
