Enamelled in the center with the American stars and stripes flag crossed and ribbon-tied with a Chinese flag, the rim with a 'rose medallion' type border of flowers, fruit and butterflies on a gilt ground (slight rubbing to enamels and gilt)--14 7/8in. (37.5cm.) wide

Lot Essay

A very similar example is in the collection of the U.S. Department of State and illustrated by Mudge, Chinese Export Porcelain in North America, p. 227 and in Treasures of State: Fine and Decorative Arts in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the Department of State, p. 293, where the authors posit that it might have been a commission in honor of the Washington Conference of 1921-22 "when eight nations recognized (the Republic of) China's sovereignty, independence, and integrity and vowed to maintain the equal commercial opportunity of all nations in China".
