The center with a coat-of-arms flanked by a savage anda mermaid supporter and above the motto PER MARE PER TERRAS, all surmounted by a coronet and a badger crest, a border of gilt bamboo intertwined with flowers around the rim--8 7/8in. (22.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This service is recorded, though not illustrated, by Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, p. 802, where he notes that it "was undoubtedly made for James Alexander", MP for Londonderry 1775-90, created Baron Caledon and later Earl of Caledon.
